What the flood status means

A river is only “flooding” relative to its own gauge. We compare each live reading with the flood thresholds the National Weather Service publishes for that specific location, then say so in plain English rather than leaving you to interpret a hydrograph. IsItFlooding polls USGS every 15 minutes, but each gauge transmits on its own schedule — commonly every 15 to 60 minutes. Every reading is labelled with how long ago it was measured, so a stale or offline sensor is obvious.

Which areas are covered?

All 48 contiguous US states, covering more than 14,000 USGS streamgauges. Alaska and Hawaii are not yet included. Gauges without a published National Weather Service flood stage still show water level and flow.
